Elmbridge Shed in need of support

Post by Elmbridge Shed » Tue Jan 23, 2018 12:32 pm

Dick Moore has been striving for the last few years to find suitable accommodation for the Elmbridge Shed. Being the richest non-Metropolitan borough in the country, finding a site which is not ear-marked for residential or commercial use is like finding 'hen's teeth'! The idea of a Shed is to give people with time on their hands and a willingness to create something for themselves or the Community, to have access to tools & equipment in a building designed for purpose. Knowledge of a skill is not required because it is hoped that craftsmen of various trades will be on hand to give advice & guidance. Whether it is woodwork, metalwork, DIY skills, small electrical repairs, computer advice & guidance or anything else, the Shed could be somewhere where you could learn about that skill you have always wanted to. For those people who are retired, unemployed or on their own, the Shed environment will provide a place to meet people.

Over the last year, discussions have been on-going with Surrey County Council about putting a second-hand prefabricated building on the Henrietta Parker Centre, Ray Road, West Molesey. Permission has been granted, but the use of the building is in question.

Dick has received about £3000 worth of equipment & tools from various donations which is being stored for future use.

When the idea of an Elmbridge Shed was first raised it was intended for men only. There is no reason why the project could not be called the Elmbridge People's Shed so that females could use it as well.

Dick has had some health problems over the last year and is looking for someone to take over the setting up of the Shed and getting a potential 'workforce' organized. If you are interested in either helping out with setting-up the Elmbridge People's Shed or becoming a 'Shedder' email elmbridgeshed@gmail.com Have a look at the UKMSA website to see what has been achieved throughout the UK.

It might help if you could explain (for the uninitiated) what "Elmbridge Shed" is?

Other than a large shed obviously...

e.g. Who are the intended users? What is the purpose of the Shed and its equipment?

There was an earlier conversation on here about it.

Might be better to post on the FB sites these days as far more active than here.

Allotment land is a pretty good idea as there are areas which are not delineated as allotments. It also aligns nicely with Sheds and might encourage allotment take up.

Without a funded building, a site such as this is of no use. Are you willing to become involved in the project, if so please email elmbridgeshed@gmail.com with your details.

On the thread linked above Cll Elmer says the Council are interested. Is that no longer the case?

Have you tried Walton Charities itself?

Have you read the book of grant-making trusts/charities?

It contains hundreds and hundreds of sources of support.

If not, I'll look for a reference later (after the haggis!) and get back to you.

FB - facebook - loads of local sites.

The Directory of Grant-making Trusts:

As you can see, it's very expensive but Surrey Libraries has copies that you can request to be sent to your local library. It takes time to go through it so you need to dedicate a couple of hours.

Could not this be part of an extension to Surrey Adult education classes (then you would not need a shed):-

You 'shed' without a shed, surely?

I'm not sure why the councilc dropped out - seems like a worthwhile project.
