Thames Valley Skiff Club

Skiffing and punting on the Thames from a riverside clubhouse off Dudley Road, with around 100 members aged from their twenties to their eighties.

Thames Valley Skiff Club keeps two traditional Thames water sports going at Walton: skiffing, in hand-crafted racing skiffs, and punting. Its clubhouse sits on the river at the bottom of Dudley Road.

About

The club is on the Walton riverside, between the Anglers pub and Walton Rowing Club, reached by a left turn at the bottom of Dudley Road. It has around 100 active members. Skiffing it describes as using hand-crafted racing skiffs suited both to recreational exercise and to inter-club racing; punting it calls a combination of technique, balance and fitness.

Who it is for

Adults. The club’s members are aged between about twenty and eighty, and it makes a point of the fact that both sports can be taken up recreationally or raced competitively.

Activities

Skiffing and punting, recreationally and in inter-club competition, with a learn to row route for people who have never done either.

When and where

The club is on the water through the year, and describes the appeal partly in terms of getting outdoors in all seasons. Current session times and the events calendar are published on the club’s own site.

Joining or taking part

Newcomers are asked to get in touch by email at [email protected], or to use the Take Part and Learn to Row sections of the club’s website.

Getting there

The clubhouse is reached by a left turn at the bottom of Dudley Road, on the riverside between the Anglers pub and Walton Rowing Club. Our riverside walks guide covers the towpath along this stretch.
