If we were choosing one place in Walton-on-Thames to work for a couple of hours, Cacao Route would be our first choice.

From the High Street it looks fairly compact. Inside, it is much larger than the frontage suggests, with several seating areas and enough room to settle in comfortably. The Wi-Fi is good, and laptop users are a familiar sight.

Cacao Route has a broader food and drink offer than the big chains: coffee, breakfast dishes and an all-day lunch menu, alongside its own chocolates, cakes and speciality hot chocolate. The Walton shop opened in 2022.

One practical drawback for a longer session: plug sockets are limited in some areas, so arrive with your laptop or tablet fully charged. For most people, the combination of space, Wi-Fi and location still makes it the strongest all-round choice.

Costa Coffee, The Heart

Costa is a straightforward choice if you want to work in the centre of Walton. It has plenty of seating and sits inside The Heart, which makes it useful between appointments or when you simply need somewhere central for an hour or two.

Starbucks’ main advantage is space. Of Walton’s main coffee shops, it is the one where we have found the most room, so it is a good choice if you want more space around you or a better chance of a table.

Starbucks lists Google Wi-Fi among this branch’s amenities, and gives its opening time as 7am, Monday to Saturday (as listed on 15 September 2026).

Caffè Nero is another dependable option. It has good Wi-Fi and one of the most useful locations in town, directly on the High Street. If you are combining a work session with shopping, appointments or a meeting elsewhere in the town centre, it is well placed.

Which of Walton’s main coffee shops is best?

For working, we would rank Costa, Starbucks, Caffè Nero and Esquires broadly equally. Choose Starbucks if space is the priority, Costa for convenience, Caffè Nero for its central High Street position, or Esquires for another comfortable High Street option. The differences are useful, but not large enough to justify a league table.

Greggs, The Heart: the value option

Greggs is not one of Walton’s main coffee shops, but this branch is more useful for working than a typical takeaway-focused bakery. It has a café-style seating section, comfortable seats, Wi-Fi and plenty of plug sockets.

Its strongest advantage is value: if you want coffee, breakfast or lunch while you work, it is one of the least expensive options in the town centre. It also opens early, at 6am Monday to Saturday according to Greggs’ shop page (checked 15 September 2026).

For a couple of hours with a laptop, where a socket, a seat and a reliable connection matter more than the surroundings, Greggs is a practical choice.

The Community Café at Riverhouse Barn is a quieter alternative to the town-centre coffee shops. It sits inside Walton’s riverside arts centre, and suits reading, writing or other work where a calmer setting helps. The café itself is a not-for-profit run by volunteers and staff, cooking with surplus food.

Riverhouse is a community arts venue rather than a co-working space, so performances, classes and events can change the atmosphere considerably, and some days suit laptop working better than others. When it is quiet, it is a pleasant place to spend an hour or two.

The Walton Village: a useful daytime alternative

The Walton Village is a pub rather than a coffee shop, but it deserves a place here because it can work very well as a daytime workspace. The main advantage is space: there are plenty of tables, the Wi-Fi is excellent and it is easier to spread out than in most cafés.

Note that it does not open until midday on weekdays, or 10am at weekends (times from the pub’s website, checked 15 September 2026), so it suits working through lunch or an afternoon rather than an early start. It is particularly useful for an informal meeting. The atmosphere changes later in the day, so this recommendation is specifically about daytime use.

Options in Hersham

Bean on the Green

Bean on the Green is our preferred independent option in Hersham. Its spot onHersham Green gives it a local, neighbourhood feel, and it works particularly well for a morning with a laptop if you live nearby and do not want to head into Walton.

The Wi-Fi is good, the atmosphere is friendly and the breakfast and lunch menu makes staying through the morning practical.

It is not a large café, and that matters. If it gets busy at lunchtime, holding a table for several hours with a laptop is unlikely to be the best use of the space. Outside the busiest periods, it is one of the more pleasant places locally to work.

Best for: independent coffee and a neighbourhood setting.

The Whiteley Community Café

Whiteley Village Club, Octagon Road, Whiteley Village, Hersham, KT12 4DN

The Whiteley Community Café is one of the strongest work-focused options in this guide. The Whiteley Homes Trust describes it as ideal for informal business meetings, with free Wi-Fi and plenty of power points.

It is open to everyone, not only residents. You can choose between the Lobby and the Lounge, or sit on the terrace overlooking the Whiteley woodland when it is warm. Alongside coffee, teas, fresh sandwiches, cakes and pastries, the café also serves beer, wine and cocktails.

Opening hours, as published by the Whiteley Homes Trust and correct as of 15 September 2026:

• Monday to Thursday: 10am to 4pm
• Friday and Saturday: 10am to 8pm
• Sunday: 10am to 4pm

So where would we actually work?

For most people, Cacao Route is our first choice in Walton-on-Thames.

If you prefer one of the main coffee shops, there is no compelling reason to rank Costa, Starbucks, Caffè Nero or Esquires above one another. Starbucks has the most room. Costa is very convenient. Caffè Nero is right on the High Street. Esquires is another comfortable central option.

• For Hersham, start with Bean on the Green, with Costa as the dependable alternative.
• For power points and informal meetings, the Whiteley Community Café is arguably the best-equipped venue in the guide.
• For quieter work, Riverhouse Barn is worth considering.
• For value and sockets, Greggs is hard to ignore.
• If you need space rather than a conventional coffee shop, The Walton Village is one of central Walton’s most useful options from midday.

Working from a café without becoming unpopular

A café table is not a free desk.

If you are staying for a couple of hours, buy another drink or something to eat. Avoid taking a four-person table when a smaller one is free. Use headphones for calls, and if a small independent café suddenly fills up at lunchtime, consider whether it is time to move on. Laptop-friendly cafés are more likely to stay laptop-friendly when the people working from them are considerate customers.
